Position Summary 

The Director of Nursing is responsible for strategic leadership, program development and implementation, and overall administration of Nursing Services in accordance with community and resident needs, government regulations, projected industry changes, and WEL policies and procedures. Performs other duties as required. 

 

 

Essential Duties and Functions 

 

  • Participates in the planning and implementation of the nursing budget; and operates nursing services within the budget guidelines established 
  • Directs and supervises scheduling of employees within established guidelines for allocation of nursing service personnel on duty within budget parameters 
  • Directs, evaluates and supervises all resident care and initiates corrective action as necessary 
  • Directs and/or assesses resident care needs and assists in the development of individualized plans of care 
  • Evaluates resident care as related to individualized resident needs, family involvement and the physician’s plan of care for the resident 
  • Communicates daily with nursing personnel providing clear, concise information, directing staff and/or assessing resident responses to medication and treatment, and make appropriate recommendations for nursing action to be implemented 
  • Ensures availability of equipment for nursing personnel, assesses equipment and supply needs; makes recommendations 
  • Routinely conducts resident rounds and initiates solutions as necessary 
  • Conducts ongoing monitoring and auditing of documentation 
  • Identifies the need/topics of nursing service educational programs  
  • Prepares various management reports, CQI reports and/or special assignments and adheres to established time schedules 
  • Assumes responsibility for the development of nursing service objectives, performance standards of nursing practice  
  • Assumes responsibility for operations of skilled nursing and compliance with federal, state and local regulations 
  • Monitors processes in skilled nursing and implements performance improvement as necessary  
  • Delivers feedback to staff related to departmental vision and development opportunities; responsible for individual performance feedback   
  • Makes informed hiring decisions by ensuring candidates are the appropriate fit for the department from a technical, strategic and cultural standpoint. 
  • Coaches, models and advocates all WEL initiatives  
  • Documents individual performance metrics, behaviors, discipline and performance ratings and delivers feedback in an appropriate, courteous and professional manner 

Qualifications

Qualifications include: 

 

  • Five years leadership experience in acute or long-term care nursing 
  • Excellent analytic and problem-solving skills including ability to think strategically, to think “out of the box”, and to develop and grow new program opportunities 
  • Excellent staff development, staff retention, and team building skills 
  • Ability to interpret and implement DOH regulations. 
  • Ability to effectively work with and report on performance metrics 
  • Ability to development staffing plans and staff to resident ratios 

Education:

  • Graduate from an accredited school of nursing, BSN preferred 

 

Licensure/Certification:

  • Current, active RN license; Certified Nursing Director of Long-Term Care certification preferred.

 

Language Skills:

  • Ability to listen to and understand information and ideas presented through spoken word and sentences, and the ability to communicate information and ideas in speaking so others will understand.
